Culcheth, farming and the Clares

Postby peterdee » Wed Apr 01, 2015 7:40 pm

Some of my ancestors, the Clares, seem to have farmed widely in Culcheth and I don't know where some of these places are. Need some help please.
I've found Clare farm where James Clare farmed 55 freehold acres in 1851. That must have been very rare to have the freehold?
Then we have Arnold Clare farming at The Row in 1841. Where is The Row?
John farming 32 acres at Tuet Hill in 1851. Where is Tuet Hill?
John farming 33 acres, again freehold, at Clares in Fields in 1851. Where are Clares in Fields?
George Clare farming 7 acres at Cinder Lane in 1881. Where is Cinder Lane?

Anybody have any idea of where these locations are?
Help would be welcomed

Thanks to Purpa2,

I have found Clare's in Fields. They are now called Clares Farm. The question is, if the Clares had in fields, where was the farm? Both Clares Farm and Clares in fields are separate entities in the 1851 census, farmed by different people.

The Row was where Bates Farm now is.

That leaves;
where was Cinder Lane?
where was Tuet Hill? Could it be Pewitt Hill ??

Cinder Lane lies pretty well along the line of the Risley by pass and on to Glover Road.
Tuet Hill is shown on a later map as Tewitt Hill which is exactly where Pewitt Hill was shown.
Seem to be getting the answers.

Not sure if this interests you and you might also already have traced this but I just noted the following property on Wigshaw Lane [ R/H side coming from Croft ] near Sephton Avenue

Tewitt Hill Cottage 1863

Hi peterdee, There was a Cinder Lane just off Twiss Green Lane, It's now a driveway to someones house. At one time it took you to Culcheth Hall. Tewitt Hill Farm was near Abbey Farm off Silver Lane. The Prison is built there now.
